At
Seven
Hills High we are
recognising the potential of our students
and providing them with quality experiences which will
encourage them to set personal goals for achievement and develop their
leadership skills.
The
leadership
opportunities at Seven Hills High School encourage responsible and active citizenship.
The programs developed help students to improve their interpersonal
relationships, increase their self esteem and communication skills.
These
experiences help students to take their role in society in a positive
manner, displaying the qualities of a self directed, self
disciplined person who can become tomorrow's leader.

This program aims to involve
students in interviewing parents and students helping to
make the transition from Primary
School to High School. The new
year 7 students will have a peer in the school who they
can trust and turn to in time of need.
The training helps
students focus on positive experiences and
opportunities at Seven Hills High.
Students learn about human behaviour and the choices people make. These
perceptions help students to analyse and understand behaviour chosen by
students.

The Peer Support and Mentoring
Program is based on the principle that people learn from other
people and their experiences. Peer Support and Mentoring was introduced
to engender a positive peer influence and to convey ideas and
information.
The training provides our
senior students with opportunities for self development and provides
junior students with a supportive environment in which the can develop
their own individuality.
Opportunities to teach and
develop group management skills are provided through this training.
Through practical experience students develop communication and
leadership skills and enhance their self esteem.

The
SLC at Seven Hills High School is an excellent example of student
leadership in action.
Members
of the SLC are elected by students. Each year group has four
representatives. An SLC president is elected by the council.
As
elected representatives it is their responsibility to listen to the
issues that are affecting the student community. Representatives then
discuss the issue and development plan of action. Often this is done in
collaboration with staff to seek a satisfactory resolution.
Student
Representatives reflect the views of students to the decision makers.
Students representation is encouraged on many school committees.
The
SLC is often involved in Fundraising activities to support community
charities and programs. This helps to develop and broaden the students'
perception of their role in society.
The
SLC offers the opportunity for student participation in individual and
group empowerment so that those who hold the future in their hands are
well prepared to take up the leadership roles.

Students
in Years 9 and 10 wishing to be considered for these leadership roles
experience the rigors of 'Merit Selection" as they would in the
workforce. Students are asked to submit a written self‑nomination
followed by a panel interview. The panel is comprised of Senior
Executive, teacher, student and parent representatives. If students go
no further than this process, they have already learnt much about
themselves and the process of preparing for an interview.
Elections take place. Students who
gain office have the added benefits gained from representing their
school and the student body in many and varied formal and informal
situations. We take much pride in our Captains and Prefects.
When
appropriate, this program is activated to encourage all members of a
particular class or Year group to take the responsibility for its
direction. In meetings with teachers, students negotiate desired
behavioural and social outcomes, derive action plans to achieve them and
share the responsibility of maintaining them.
Through the Performing Arts
Students
with particular skills in playing instruments, singing, acting &
dancing are encouraged to
share
those skills with others by "tutoring" them informally at
lunchtimes and by taking part in
performances
where those with more experience help and guide younger, less
experienced
students.
Through
Sport
Students with an interest in and aptitude for sport
organization are encouraged to develop those skills by working closely
with the Sport Coordinator in organising various sport Gala Days &
School Carnivals. Students with particular sporting talents are also
encouraged to help train various school teams.
Through
Mock Trial, Scram and Debating
Students with an interest and
ability in public. speaking can develop those skills through these
activities. Through representing our school in various forums,
responsibility, dedication as well as leadership are also developed. Our
school has a long tradition of working in these areas.
Through
Childhood Studies
Students undertaking courses in
Childhood Studies organise and experience the running of crèches. Skills
in planning, organization and leadership are developed and refined.
Girls and boys have rated these experiences highly and found them
thoroughly enjoyable!
