Gender equityThere are several gender equity programs running at Seven Hills High School. Our students are young and impressionable and need positive role models to look to for inspiration and encouragement. On the Friday before each Mother’s Day and Father’s Day weekend the school community celebrates those relationships our students share with the older, significant males and females in their lives. Boys and girls have an opportunity to say thank you to their parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, friends or neighbours and invite them to breakfast in the school library. Students and parents have commented what a positive experience it is to participate in the breakfast. As most people lead such busy lives, many do not have time each morning to sit and talk to their son or daughter. This is one occasion where no one has to prepare breakfast and all enjoy it. Seven Hills High School has benefited from its involvement with the Boys Education Lighthouse project in 2004 and 2005. Funding from this project allowed two teachers to be trained in the Rock & Water program which helps young boys to realise their inner strengths and focus on positive behaviours. Two groups of Year 8 and 9 boys meet with their trained teacher once a cycle to perform martial arts style activities that help them become more socially and emotionally aware of their surroundings and the impact they have on others. Boys also have the opportunity to learn and demonstrate social skills through a formal program run by the youth pastor, Mr Chris Smith. After regular meetings to discuss what it means to be a male in the 21st century our boys eventually prepare, cook and serve breakfast to the principals from the surrounding primary school, showcasing the their newly acquired skills. Primary School principals are regularly delighted to meet with some of their ex-students and to compliment them on their progress. Girls at the school also have the opportunity to participate in gender programs. In particular they have access to a Day of Etiquette and Grooming, a one day course in the city. Students spend the day being taught how to walk, talk, and dress to impress. This is offered once a term for approximately 30 students, an occasion few wish to miss out on. Realising dreams is important for success. The Successful Women’s Forum is an event run for Year 10 girls where we invite range of women form a variety of backgrounds to speak about their journeys to success. Our girls learn that goals are important, success is possible in all areas of life, and that anything can be achieved if they set their sights on it.
