| The award of the School Certificate is the
usual requirement for students wishing to go on and study for
the Higher School Certificate. It is generally awarded to
eligible students after four years of secondary school (Years
7–10). The Years 7–10 curriculum is designed to provide a basis
for many of the courses offered for the Higher School
Certificate.
To be eligible for a School Certificate, students must:
- (i) have attended a government school; or
(ii) have attended a registered non-government school to
which a current certificate of accreditation for
presentation of candidates for the School Certificate
applies; or
(iii) have attended a school outside New South Wales
recognised by the Board; and
- (b) have participated, to the Board’s satisfaction, in
courses of study that have been determined under the
Education Act 1990 (NSW) as appropriate to be undertaken by
candidates for the School Certificate; and
- have been accepted by the Board as having satisfactorily
completed those courses of study; and
- have undertaken, to the Board’s satisfaction, the
requisite examinations or other forms of assessment; and
- have complied with any requirements prescribed by the
regulations or any requirements imposed by the Minister or
the Board; and
- have completed Year 10.
This means students must
...
·
have a satisfactory
record of application / effort. This means that you
can show that you have tried to do the best you can. For each course that you
study, you must...
-
complete the assigned work ‑ including assessment tasks ‑ to be best of
your ability
-
resolve any problems you have with marks or grades awarded when the work
is given back to you by your teacher.
-
have met the course requirements in effort and achievement.
·
have a satisfactory
record of attendance. This means that unexplained absences (when you've been
away and not brought in a note to explain why you were away), truancy and
constant lateness (partial absences) could prevent you from getting your School
Certificate.
Requirements for the award of the School Certificate
To qualify for the award of the School Certificate, a student
must
- satisfactorily complete the mandatory curriculum
requirements of the Board
- attend school until the final day of Year 10 as
determined by the school system concerned or by the
principal of non-systemic schools; and
- make a serious attempt at the School Certificate Tests.
(English-literacy, Science, Mathematics, Australian History,
Geography, Civics and Citizenship).

The , Non Award Process is an
important process to ensure that School Certificates when they are
awarded are a meaningful and well deserved record of a students academic
achievements of years 7 to 10.
This is given
when...
-
you have studied a course NOT approved by the BOS (none of these at our
school)
-
you have not applied yourself with "diligence and sustained effort".
-
you
have not achieved some or all of the course outcomes.
·
Satisfactory
achievement is judged by ... attendance involvement in class completed
assignments / homework level of achievement.
·
If you are in danger
of an "N" Award ‑ you will be warned in writing in time for you to correct the
problem. (Note: Letters of Concern are an early indication that you may be
putting you School Certificate in jeopardy.)
·
If you have not
completed a course, you will receive an "N" beside that course in your Record of
Achievement Part A, and that could mean that you don't get a School Certificate.
·
`If you get an "N"
Award, you can appeal against it. Forms are available from the Principal.
In the following cases, a School Certificate will not be
awarded...
- the student has not satisfactorily completed the
minimum pattern of courses
- the student has not studied their courses for the
required minimum time.
- the student has not had adequate experience in one or
more Compulsory subject.
- the student has been unsatisfactory in overall
attendance.
- the student has left school before the given date by
the BOS with the Principal's approval.
- the student has been unsatisfactory in overall
application.
- the student was absent from the Reference Test without
approved leave from the Principal.
- the student did not make a serious attempt at the
Reference Test.
- the student was found to have engaged in malpractice
during the Reference Tests.
- the student did not comply with other BOS requirements.
Students who do not qualify for a School Certificate, may
be issued with a Record of Achievement on which will be shown courses which were
satisfactorily completed.
The Process behind an N award:
- Teachers inform Head Teachers of students who are not
meeting the requirements for a School Certificate
- Head Teachers send forms to DP so that
letters are organized and interviews can be made with students.
(Note that the letter is null and void if the task is completed
satisfactorily and then the process begins again)
- After a student receives two letters the Head teacher will inform the Year Adviser
and set up a meeting with parents. The Deputy will continue to
monitor the process and will be involved with Welfare aspect of the
process.
- If the student fails to meet the requirements outlined then an N
award recommendation will be made to the Board of Studies
