Excursions
Definitions 1. An excursion is a learning experience external to the school site, initiated, organized and supervised by a school or schools and approved by the principal(s) or an assistant director‑general as appropriate. 2. An excursion is an integral part of the school's curriculum and specifically of the students' learning program and must be justified on this basis. 3. An excursion can range from a brief visit of less than one hour to a local point of interest, to an extended journey occupying a number of days and requiring overnight accommodation. 4. Usually an excursion will take place wholly within the official school week or term. There may be some occasions when an excursion needs to occur during or extend into a weekend or school vacation to meet curriculum objectives. 5. Since excursions offer enrichment to the planned curriculum, all students within the specific learning group should be given the opportunity to participate unless exceptional circumstances exist. 6. The same standards of conduct and the obligation to report suspected child abuse, improper conduct of a sexual nature and misconduct apply throughout all stages of an excursion as they do in schools. (a) GENERAL PROCEDURE AND RULES Excursions must be planned in consultation with the Head Teacher. Head Teachers must take excursion details to an executive meeting for final approval. This should be two weeks in advance of proposed excursion date. Extraordinary circumstances should be presented to Senior Executive for consideration. No excursion is to take place in the excursion free week of each term. Excursion are to close 48 hours before the excursion takes place. All money and notes should be received by this time. All excursions must be self funding. If costs are not covered by student contributions then excursions cannot take place. Cost of casual relief must be factored into cost. Variation to Routine forms must be completed and lodged with D.P., 48 hours prior to excursion date. The Excursion calendar is kept by D.P. in front office. Staff members attending excursions must have current emergency care qualifications. Any overnight activity or water based activity must have a staff supervisor with current CPR qualifications. Students attending excursions must be dressed in full uniform unless excursion activity dictates otherwise and approval has been given. A final list of students attending the excursion must be submitted to Rolls Office 24 hours prior to excursion taking place. For extended excursions where there are a limited number of positions the Senior Executive must be consulted. A panel will be convened, comprising, Senior Executive, organizing teacher and welfare personnel to facilitate selection b) ROLL MARKING Where possible roll marking should be arranged so that students can depart from school after normal school roll call in the morning. The excursion roll should be marked at least 3 times before departing school, before departing the venue and at the completion of the excursion. c) STUDENTS INELIGIBLE FOR EXCURSION Students who have been suspended from school are ineligible for 10 weeks after suspension. Students who have not paid at least 48 hours prior to excursion Students who have not returned permission notes. Students not in full school uniform. (including shoes) Senior Executive have right to veto any student who they deem unsuitable to attend. d) RISK MANAGEMENT ASSESSMENT HT's should make a risk management assessment before giving approval for any excursion to take place. The following should be considered: -educational justification of excursion -nature and location of the excursion -number of students involved -age, maturity, capabilities and experience of students -qualifications and experience of supervisors.
(e) EXCURSION TIMETABLE Two weeks prior to activity ‑A list of all students attending to be checked by office. -Parent consent forms to be issued. -Dress and behaviour requirements explained to students.
48 hours before excursion: ‑ supervision organization submitted to DP ‑ planned itinerary submitted ‑ consent forms returned and filed by HT ‑ transport arrangements confirmed ‑ request for cheque (blue form) submitted to Front Office ‑ final list of names given to Rolls Office for inclusion in rolls ‑ Variation to Routine from submitted to DP
At completion of excursion: ‑notify Rolls Office of any absentees ‑report on attendance and behaviour to HT Sport and excursion policy addendum All students travelling by train or bus, to and from the event, will be accompanied by, a teacher On some occasions students will be driven, to and from the event, by the accompanying teacher On some occasions, volunteer parents will drive students, to and from the event On ail occasions parents will be informed by note at least one week in advance advising them of the venue, date and the particular transport arrangements in place for their child. No student will be allowed to participate in the sporting event without a parent signature on the return note. All students will be returned to school at the end of the sporting event, by an accompanying teacher All students must be in full Seven Hills High School PE uniform when representing the school at sport or in full school uniform when on a school excursion
